STEPHEN POLLARD strikes after it emerged Oxford University accepted money from Oswald Mosley

The day I graduated from Oxford over 30 years ago was one of the proudest days of my life. But when I look at my alma mater today, I feel a growing shame.

Yesterday’s revelation that the university and two of its colleges have accepted a bequest of £ 12million from the fortune of the late British fascist Sir Oswald Mosley should make anyone in their right mind sick.

But it is particularly offensive to all of us in Britain’s Jewish community.

Mosley was a racist and Hitler worshiper, rightly interned during World War II.

Would Oxford be prepared to take money from Stalin’s heirs? From the North Korean regime of Kim Jong-un? Or maybe a new library endowed by Pol Pot?

The new grants were made from a trust set up ten years ago by the late son of Oswald, Formula 1 mogul Max Mosley, himself a highly questionable figure and – thanks to a seminal investigation of the Daily Mail – a proven former racist.

Since the trust is based on Max’s bloated inheritance – tainted money from his fascist father – Oxford is ashamed of having accepted it.

Oswald Mosley’s racist bigotry is well known. He spent decades leading one crazy far-right sect after another: his British Union of pre-war Fascists became the so-called “Union Movement” throughout the 1950s and 1960s. In their wisdom, the British people were largely repelled by him.

But a particularly rotten apple did not fall very far from the tree.

Max Mosley, who died earlier this year, was his father’s son. His dubious sexual inclinations do not concern us here: in other words, sadomasochistic orgies, in particular whipping prostitutes dressed in striped pajamas while counting in German, are not to everyone’s taste.

More important is its policy. And here, in his later years and like many genuine fascists, Max Mosley has spent his fortune trying to muzzle the free press while trying to obscure his racist past.

Ultimately, even he couldn’t hide the fact that during the 1960s he was an active supporter of his father’s movement.

On a walk through a Jewish neighborhood in east London in 1962, Max Mosley stood shoulder to shoulder with his father’s henchmen as they chanted: “The Jews out!”

He then fought Jewish protesters, some of whom were World War II veterans. One of them, whom the Mail spoke to during its investigation, had lost relatives in Auschwitz.

In 2018, the Mail revealed sordid details of Max Mosley’s racist story, including a leaflet he produced for a by-election in Manchester in 1961 claiming that ‘immigrants of color’ spread tuberculosis, venereal diseases and leprosy, and threatened the health of children.

Until his death, he refused to apologize for this appalling leaflet.

Today, the University of Oxford insists it took “legal, ethical and reputational issues” into consideration when accepting the gift from the Alexander Mosley Charitable Trust, named after the son of Max Mosley who died of a heroin overdose in 2009.

But he could not do it with the necessary rigor. On the one hand, the Mosley grant will be used to set up the Alexander Mosley Professor of Biophysics Fund.

I repeat: the Mosleys supported Hitler, who murdered six million Jews – including members of my own family.

Now, Jewish students in Oxford will be forced to see the Mosley name every day, woven into the fabric of the university.

What are the “ethics” of this?

Still, maybe even worse than taking the money – and don’t forget Oxford and its colleges have a combined endowment of over £ 6bn, so they’re hardly struggling – is the context.

For several long and exhausting years, Oxford bowed down to the frantic demands of a small group of awake students.

Curricula have been “decolonized” amid tortured debates over the destruction of statues of long-deceased figures, such as Victorian mining magnate Cecil Rhodes.

Peter Conrad, an internationally renowned English gift, lamented recently how “the academic study of literature” has been “reduced… to rename.

But unlike Rhodes and the Atlantic slave trade, Oswald and Max Mosley are not figures of the distant past.

There are people alive today who bravely resisted Oswald Mosley’s black shirts in the 1930s.

I was a child when Max Mosley was campaigning for his father’s anti-Jewish labor movement.

To their credit, several leading Oxford academics have protested the donation and are urging students to do the same.

Indeed, where are these students so awake now, demanding that “Mosley Must Fall”?

Their hypocrisy and that of the university is astounding.

And, of course, Oxford has form in this area.

As recently as last week, we read how an Oxford college accepted £ 155million from a self-made billionaire Vietnamese airline mogul, with alleged ties to that country’s tough Communist regime, and who was fined several times for using half-naked flight attendants. to promote its flights.

The college, Linacre, even renames itself in his honor. These double standards are nauseating.

For years, I made a monthly donation to my old college. With a heavy heart, I will now think very carefully about whether I continue to do so.
