Pro-Israel Group Calls for Ethical Investigation of Tlaib for Retweeting Terrorism-Related Charities | JNS
A pro-Israel group in the United States is calling on Congress to investigate Representative Rashida Tlaib (D-Mich.) For her apparent support for a charity linked to terrorist activity in the Gaza Strip.
In a press release on Tuesday, the Middle East Truth Foundation (EMET) highlighted an August 21 retweet from Tlaib promoting the Dallas-based Islamic charity Baitulmaal. The retweet was then deleted.
According to the statement, the organization was investigation by the Israel-based Alma Research and Education Center, which said part of the money donated to Baitulmaal went to Gaza-based charities, the United Friends Association for Social Development (UFA).
The UFA has been accused of having close ties to the terrorist organization Hamas and holds strong anti-Semitic views. The organization is also accused of distributing money to the families of Palestinian martyrs.
Baitulmaal director Mazen Mukhtar is an Egyptian-born imam and activist who has been the subject of a counterterrorism investigation for running a website soliciting donations for the Taliban and other jihadists, according to a report by 2004 Washington Post article.
“Unfortunately, many Islamic terrorist organizations, such as Hamas, are taking a benevolent facade and donating some of their funding to hospitals, schools and orphanages to win the hearts and minds of the people. They use it as an attractive marketing tool to recruit fighters for their cause, ”EMET Founder and President Sarah Stern said in the statement. “Unfortunately, there are front groups in the United States, such as Baitumaal, which appear harmless but funnel money to Hamas or other terrorist entities, aiding enemies of the United States and Israel. “
EMET asked the House Ethics Committee to investigate Tlaib’s conduct in this situation and the US Department of the Treasury to investigate Baitulmaal’s financial relations, to rescind his 501 (c) (3) status. and use its Terrorist Financing Tracker to uncover the financial networks of such groups in the United States.
“In recent years, terrorist organizations such as Hamas and Hezbollah have become very sophisticated in funding their terrorist activities, including soliciting money under the false pretext of charity. These funds are not only used to support their operations, but also to strengthen their prestige among the population and increase the effectiveness of their recruitment efforts, ”EMET wrote in its statement.
“This is not the first and probably not the last case of terrorist organizations collecting money in the United States under the false pretext of charity. Yet this is the first time, to our knowledge, that a sitting member of the United States Congress has used his platform to solicit donations that could ultimately end up in the pockets of terrorists listed as a terrorist organization by the Department of the State. “
