Gulf Breeze and Navarre among regional teams qualified for regionals

The Florida High School Athletic Association released regional brackets for the 2022 state volleyball playoffs Saturday night.

Seven Pensacola-area volleyball teams qualified for the big dance: Booker T. Washington, Central, Gulf Breeze, Jay, Navarre, Pensacola High and Pensacola Catholic.

The Crusaders and Dolphins both clinched their state playoff tickets by winning their respective district tournaments last week.

The Wildcats, Royals and Raiders received sweeping offers after each team earned district runner-up honors. Finally, the Jaguars and Tigers are because of their RPI ranking.

Currently on an 18-game winning streak, Gulf Breeze, the fifth-ranked team in the state, is the second seed in the 1-6A region. The team begins its run against a familiar foe in Navarre, seeded No. 7.

The two teams face off Wednesday at 7 p.m. at Gulf Breeze High School. The Dolphins are 3-0 against the Raiders this season, including a 1-6A District Finals sweep. Navarre enters the game with a 19-8 record while Gulf Breeze is 23-3 overall.

Booker T. Washington (16-8) is also in action Wednesday. Seeded third in the 1-5A region, the Wildcats host No. 6 Jacksonville Ridgeview (16-11).

On Tuesday, Pensacola Catholic (16-11) takes the stand in a rematch of the 1-3A District Finals. The No. 4 Crusaders host Florida State University No. 5 High School (13-11) in the Region 1-3A quarterfinals. Days earlier, Catholic rallied from a 2-1 deficit to defeat the Seminoles in five sets and claim their third consecutive district crown.

In Region 1-4A, Pensacola High (17-9) hits the road as the seventh seed. The Tigers head east to Jacksonville in a game against No. 2 Bolles (19-7) at 6 p.m. CST Tuesday.

Meanwhile, the Region 1-1A bracket kicks off at 7 p.m. Friday

No. 2 Jay (13-8) plays a regional semifinal against No. 3 Chipley (13-9), District 2-1A champions. In the other semifinal, Central (5-17) will face top seed Baker, the 1-1A District champion. The Gators (19-6) have swept the Jaguars twice this season.

Last season, Central picked up a five-set victory over Baker in the 1-1A Region Final.

Quarter-final Region 1-6A: No. 7 Navarre (19-8) at No. 2 Gulf Breeze (23-3), 7 p.m.

Friday

Semi-final Region 1-1A: No. 2 Jay (13-8) at No. 3 Chipley (13-9), 7 p.m.

Semi-final Region 1-1A: No. 4 Central (5-17) at No. 1 Baker (19-6), 7 p.m.
