Denver Jewish school vandalism leaves students puzzled
The Denver Torah Academy was vandalized and nearby George Washington High School was sprayed with anti-Semitic and anti-LGBTQ graffiti over the weekend of Oct. 15-16, according to local Fox affiliate KDVR.
The graffiti attack took place on Saturday evening, according to school officials.
On Sunday afternoon, stones were thrown through the windows of the Denver Torah Academy and its electrical box was damaged.
Both cases are being investigated by the Denver Police Department’s bias-motivated crime team, but police suspect the incidents may not have been related to each other.
“I don’t know why people can’t accept us,” Abigail Boyd, a Jewish high school graduate from George Washington, told the local news station. Boyd also attended the Denver Torah Academy.
âI don’t really understand why people don’t understand that it’s just a culture,â she said. âIt’s something we believe in. It’s like being a Christian or something. “
Colorado saw a 34% increase in hate crimes between 2019 and 2020, according to ADL data. In addition, more than 60% of all hate crimes of a religious nature across the country are against Jews, âsaid the ADL regional director.
Police are investigating the incidents.
